Repairing Holes in Synthetic Materials
Almost all outdoor textiles we use are made from some type of synthetic material. Usually, it’s polyamide, nylon, polyester, or a blend. Whether it’s a down jacket, thermal trousers, a canopy, or a horse blanket, small holes and tears can occur. The sooner you repair the holes, the better. With the right repair patch, the solution is both cost-effective and durable over time. Repairing holes in synthetic materials is quick and easier than you might think – as long as you use high-quality patches with strong adhesion.Self-Adhesive Repair Patches
We offer a wide range of repair patches in various materials, colours, and sizes. The common feature is that all patches are self-adhesive, making the repair process very simple. The patches adhere to several synthetic materials with different textures. They also stick well to various blended fabrics. All our patches have been tested on multiple types of materials and show excellent adhesion, as long as the fabric hasn’t been chemically treated. Additionally, the patches have been tested to withstand large amounts of water without losing their adhesion.Repair Patches for Different Fabrics and Materials
You can easily repair a hole in a down jacket with patches designed for such materials. These patches are also ideal for similar materials, such as the outer fabric of a sleeping bag, tent fabric, or even an umbrella. These types of materials are typically thin, smooth, and synthetic, without stretch properties. However, there are many types of synthetic materials, and not all are thin. For example, awning fabric, horse blankets, boat canopies, and tarpaulins are thicker, heavier fabrics with a coarser texture. These kinds of materials require tougher repair patches with different properties.Repair Patches for Tougher Repairs
For materials like awning fabric, overalls, sailcloth, canopies, horse blankets, as well as inflatable boats and air mattresses, the patches should be elastic and preferably a bit thicker. The advantage of elastic patches is that they can withstand greater tension without losing adhesion. Elastic patches are also transparent and provide excellent adhesion to various types of materials.

Clean the area thoroughly and remove any dirt, grease, or residues. Then, trim away any loose threads around the hole to ensure the best possible adhesion to the surrounding fabric.Cut a piece of the repair patch larger than the hole you’re fixing. A round patch offers the best adhesion due to its smooth edges. If a square patch is required, round off the corners with scissors to avoid sharp edges that could peel over time.Peel off a small section of the backing and stick the patch onto the fabric. Gradually peel off the rest of the backing while pressing the patch into place. If possible, use a hairdryer on full heat for a few seconds directly over the patch. This helps activate the adhesive. Then, firmly press the patch into the material with your thumbs, ensuring it adheres properly across the entire surface.
