Description
Has your down jacket got a hole or tear? Cut a suitable piece from the patch, stick it over the damage and use your jacket again – no needle or thread needed.
The patch measures 10 × 20 cm and can be cut to fit the damage. Cut a rounded piece for a smaller hole, a narrow strip for a tear or a larger piece when you need more coverage. One sheet can be enough for several smaller repairs.
You do not need to know exactly what your jacket is made from. The patch works best on thinner, fairly smooth outer fabrics, such as nylon, polyester or the outer fabric of a Gore-Tex shell garment. The thin patch sits close to the fabric, reducing the risk of the edges rubbing loose or catching on something while the garment is being worn.
- Clean the area with one of the included alcohol wipes and allow the surface to dry completely.
- Cut a piece that covers the damage with a good margin and round off the corners.
- Peel only a small section of the patch away from the backing. Leave the rest attached so that you do not need to touch the adhesive.
- Position the patch over the damage and stick the exposed section in the right place. Gradually pull away the backing while pressing down the rest of the patch.
- Press the patch firmly and evenly against the fabric. Rub over the entire surface, paying particular attention to the edges.
- The garment can be used straight away, but leave it for 24 hours if possible.
A new jacket may look completely clean but still have a factory-applied water-repellent or surface treatment. This treatment can make it more difficult for the adhesive to bond properly.
Always clean the area with one of the included alcohol wipes, even if the garment is new and looks clean. Allow the surface to dry completely before applying the patch. This gives the adhesive a better chance to bond and is an easy step to overlook.
If possible, gently warm the attached patch with a hairdryer for a few seconds. The warmth softens the adhesive and helps the patch make better contact with the fabric. Do not heat it for longer – more heat will not improve the bond and may dry out the adhesive instead.
You can also rub the patch firmly against the fabric. The friction creates a little warmth while pressing the patch against the surface, producing a similar effect.
