With a watch case opener, you can loosen a screw-back case when the battery in a basic watch needs replacing. Place the tool’s two pins into two opposing notches in the case back. Use the knurled adjustment wheel to set the distance between the pins from 13 to 56 mm.
The watch case opener fits many common watches with a screw-back case and two or more notches. It is not designed for press-fit or snap-on case backs. The tool works best when the pins sit securely in the notches and the case back is not extremely tight.
- Place the watch face down on a soft, stable surface.
- Turn the adjustment wheel until the pins fit into two opposing notches.
- Check that both pins are securely seated and hold the tool straight over the case back.
- Apply even downward pressure and carefully turn anticlockwise until the case back loosens. Then unscrew it by hand.
- After replacing the battery, first thread the case back into place by hand, turning clockwise. Then tighten it carefully with the tool.
If the tool begins to flex or the pins start to slip out of the notches, the case back is probably too tight. Stop rather than applying more force, as the tool or watch could otherwise be damaged.
We recommend taking valuable or pressure-tested watches to a watchmaker. A closed metal bracelet can also restrict the working space. If the design allows, detach the bracelet from the watch case with a spring bar tool first. This makes it easier to hold the case opener straight.
