Shine marks can occur when the heat and pressure from an iron flatten the surface of the fabric. They are often most noticeable on dark garments and delicate materials, but can also appear over seams, pockets and other areas where several layers of fabric overlap.
The cover attaches underneath the iron and creates a protective layer between the hot soleplate and the fabric. It reduces direct contact and helps distribute the heat more evenly. This makes ironing gentler and reduces the risk of shine marks and other pressing marks.
The cover is particularly useful when ironing dark trousers, jackets, wool blends and synthetic materials. It can also provide extra protection for garments with prints or reflective details, provided the garment’s care instructions allow ironing.
The perforated surface allows steam from the iron to pass through. The cover fits most standard irons and is held securely in place by the spring fitting.

- Make sure the iron is switched off and completely cold.
- Slide the tip of the iron into the folded pocket at the front of the cover.
- Position the cover centrally underneath the soleplate.
- Pull the spring around the back of the iron so that the cover is held firmly in place.
- Check that the cover is secure before switching on the iron.
- Allow the iron and cover to cool before removing it.
The soleplate cover makes ironing gentler, but it does not replace the garment’s care instructions. Always use the temperature recommended on the care label. A material marked as unsuitable for ironing should not be ironed, even with the cover fitted.
Start with a low temperature when ironing a delicate material. Avoid pressing down firmly or leaving the iron stationary in one place. For particularly delicate garments, test on a less visible area first.
A well-padded ironing board can also reduce the risk of seams, pockets and other thicker areas leaving impressions on the right side of the fabric.
